Brushing your hair extensions the right way is the single most important step in keeping them looking soft, shiny, and tangle-free—and it’s surprisingly simple once you know the method. Start with a gentle detangling spray or leave-in conditioner to give the strands some slip, then reach for a wide-tooth comb or an extension-safe loop brush. Always hold each section of hair gently near the bond or weft to remove tension, and begin combing at the ends. Work your way up in small strokes, gradually releasing any knots until you can brush smoothly from root to tip.
Once the major tangles are gone, switch to a boar-bristle brush (or another soft-bristle brush) for a final polish. This helps distribute natural oils—whether from your scalp or your favorite lightweight serum—evenly through the hair, sealing the cuticle and adding that coveted glossy finish. Aim to brush in sections: divide your hair into top, middle, and bottom layers, and gently brush each zone two to three times a day to prevent matting before it starts.
Be extra careful when your extensions are wet—wet hair is at its most fragile. If you must detangle damp strands, mist with detangler and use a wide-tooth comb, avoiding any metal or fine-tooth brushes that can snag the wefts. And always resist the urge to sleep with wet hair; moisture weakens the bonds and increases the risk of overnight tangles. With a little daily care and the right tools, your extensions will stay luxuriously smooth and last for weeks longer.
